Client: Christian Retirement Homes - Bob Chitwood

Project Summary: The schematic design phase identified key issues such as grade restrictions (minimum handicap slope for ramps) and fire-safety codes (minimum radius for fire-truck access) that shaped the final design. Each of the 148 units has a kitchenette and separate HVAC system for individual comfort. Also available within the 40,000 square foot building is a beauty parlor, concession, and recreation room. But the main feature of this project is the three-story atrium with the translucent Kalwall skylight.

Self Analysis: The atmosphere of this assisted living facility is much like living in a nice hotel or apartment complex among friends. The biggest challenge was to convey this concept to regulating authorities and key personnel who wanted to enforce the same restrictions that apply to nursing homes - creating a sterile institutional environment.

Results/Personal Information: To my benefit, my final design studio focused on medical and retirement facilities. And since I started this project during that same semester, it was a real treat to apply what I was learning in class to an actual project.
